Brazil Time Zones: The Real-Time Overlap Advantage for US Teams
Brazil spans UTC-3 to UTC-5. Most of the population, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba and Florianópolis, sits at UTC-3 (Brasília Time), which is one to two hours ahead of US Eastern Time depending on US daylight saving.
The practical result is 6 to 8 hours of overlap with a standard US workday. That is the single most consequential fact in the nearshore argument, and it is worth more than the cost saving.
Brazil abolished daylight saving time in 2019, so the offset does not shift on the Brazilian side. The gap changes only when the US moves its clocks.

Roughly 93% of Brazil’s population lives in the UTC-3 zone, and every major tech hub is in it. For hiring purposes, treat Brazil as UTC-3 unless you are specifically sourcing from Manaus.

Asynchronous work is not free. It has a specific, measurable cost: every blocked question costs a full day of throughput.

Brazil does not observe daylight saving. The US does. Twice a year the offset shifts by an hour, in March and November, and neither side is expecting it.
Recurring meetings scheduled in one party’s local time will silently move for the other. Set calendar invites in a named time zone rather than a fixed offset, and send a reminder the week the US clocks change.
