Brazilian Developer Salaries in 2026: What You Actually Pay vs. a US Hire
A bad hire in a cross-border setup rarely fails loudly. It fails quietly, over months, while the costs pile up where you…
How Much Brazilian Developers Earn Working for US Companies in 2026
A senior Brazilian software engineer earns approximately $36,800 per year working for a Brazilian company and approximately $83,200 per year working remotely for a US company. That is a 2.3x premium, and it is the single largest compensation decision available to most senior engineers in Brazil.
The bands, by seniority, for remote-for-global roles:
| Level | Remote for a global company (USD/yr) | Brazil domestic (USD/yr) | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior | ~$30,300 | ~$9,800 | 3.1x |
| Mid / Pleno | ~$54,900 | ~$18,400 | 3.0x |
| Senior | ~$83,200 | ~$36,800 | 2.3x |
| Staff / Principal | ~$92,300 – $122,500 | ~$45,400 | 2.0x – 2.7x |

Now the part the salary tables do not tell you.
All figures here come from named third-party research, not from Tookn placement data. TechFX, cited throughout, is a partner company that runs an annual salary survey of Brazilians working remotely for foreign employers. It is a separate business from Tookn.
The premium is not uniform. It tracks global demand for your specific stack, not the Brazilian market.

Read the ranges, not the midpoints. A senior back-end engineer can land anywhere between $72,000 and $108,000 for the same title. A $36,000 spread is not explained by years of experience. It is explained by negotiation, by how the role was scoped, and by which company stage you joined.
Back-end and front-end engineers show the narrowest gap between Brazilian and US pay, around 29%. That sounds like bad news for companies. For you it is the opposite: those stacks are already priced near the global band.
The stacks moving fastest in 2026 are Go and Kotlin, with salary increments of 3.9% to 6.0%. High-concurrency backend systems and modern mobile architecture are where supply is thinnest.
English proficiency shows a 0.50 correlation with higher salary in the Brazilian market. Only 12.7% of Brazilian developers work for foreign companies, and language is the main filter separating those two groups.
What matters is not your certificate level.
“A lot of Brazilians think about fluency as being a C1 or C2 level. Fluency is about the ability to communicate. It’s the ability to translate an idea or a concept, and to receive information and translate that too.” — Beatriz França, People and Culture leader, 10+ years, at Beyond Hire
In practice, B2 with strong communication instincts outperforms C1 with hesitation. Except for people-facing and leadership roles, most companies do not state a level at all.
Joining an early-stage startup can mean starting below market and multiplying after a raise. One engineer at Beyond Hire described joining a US startup as a founding engineer at a low salary, then seeing that salary roughly triple after the company raised, and moving from founding engineer to head of engineering.
That is a real path. It is also not a universal recommendation.
“I wouldn’t do that. I know I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the many extra hours. So the most important thing is for you to understand your current situation. Do you have kids? Do you need money right now? Are you okay earning a little lower now for three, four, five times more later?” — Lucas Pinto, 2020 Engineering Emmy winner, leading data engineering at a Fortune 100 media company
Both engineers were right. The offer that pays best is not the offer that fits best.
Most senior remote roles for foreign companies use the PJ contractor model: you invoice through your own CNPJ, and there is no 13th salary, no FGTS and no paid vacation. PJ rates typically run 30% to 50% above CLT gross to compensate for exactly that.
Before comparing a PJ offer against a CLT offer, normalize them. A CLT package carries a 13th salary, a one-third vacation bonus, FGTS at 8% and INSS contributions. That is real value that a headline PJ number hides.
Understanding this makes you better at negotiating it.
A US company hiring domestically pays $180,000 base for a senior engineer, plus $45,000 to $72,000 in benefits and payroll taxes, for a total cash cost of $225,000 to $252,000 and a market rate closer to $312,000 with equity.
Hiring you at $83,200 saves them roughly 55%. They are not paying you $83,200 because that is generous relative to Brazil. They are paying it because it is cheap relative to their alternative.
That framing matters at the negotiating table. You are not asking for a favor priced against São Paulo. You are pricing against their actual alternative.
The offer is roughly 10% of the journey. What determines whether you are still there in year three, at a higher band, is what happens after: surviving the first 90 days, translating across cultures, and earning autonomy.
The first contract is not the finish line. We wrote the rest of that path in The First 90 Days at a Global Company [→ https://tookn.io/blog/first-90-days-global-company] and From Mid-Level to Senior [→ https://tookn.io/blog/mid-level-to-senior-global-teams].
How much does a Brazilian developer earn working for a US company? Roughly $30,300 per year at junior level, $54,900 at mid level, $83,200 at senior level, and $92,300 to $122,500 at staff or principal level, in USD. Those figures come from TechFX Global Salary 2025, covering 1,428 Brazilian professionals working remotely, 85.5% of them for US-based employers.
How much more do you earn working remotely for a foreign company from Brazil? About 2.3x more at senior level. A senior engineer earns roughly $36,800 per year at a Brazilian company and roughly $83,200 per year remote for a US company. The multiple is even higher at junior and mid level, around 3x, though absolute figures are lower.
Do I need to be fluent in English to work for a US company? You need to communicate, not to certify. Fluency in this context means conveying an idea clearly and understanding one accurately. Most companies do not state a CEFR level, and B2 with strong communication instincts routinely outperforms C1 with hesitation. Leadership and people-facing roles are the main exceptions.
Which tech stack pays the most for Brazilian remote developers? Go and Kotlin currently show the strongest salary movement, with increments of 3.9% to 6.0%, driven by demand for high-concurrency backend systems and modern mobile architecture. SRE and DevOps show the widest absolute range at $30,000 to $100,000. Engineering management tops the band at $84,000 to $120,000.
Is PJ or CLT better for a remote role with a foreign company? PJ is the standard model for senior remote-for-global roles and produces higher take-home, which is why most senior professionals prefer it. It carries no 13th salary, no FGTS and no paid vacation, which is why PJ rates typically run 30% to 50% above CLT gross. Normalize both offers before comparing them.
Why do US companies pay Brazilians more than Brazilian companies do? Because their reference point is their own market, not yours. A senior US hire costs $225,000 to $252,000 fully loaded. At $83,200 they save around 55% while paying you well above the local ceiling. One salary, two winners.
